Benzyl alcohol is used as a preservative in ointments, as a desiccant for fibers, nylon filaments and plastic films, as a stabilizer for polyvinyl chloride, as a photographic developer, as a solvent for acetate, inks, paints, lacquers, epoxy coatings, dyes, casein, wormwood and gelatin, and as an intermediate in the preparation of benzyl esters or ethers. It is also used to make spices and flavorings (mostly benzyl alcohol esters of fatty acids) as additives in soaps, perfumes, cosmetics and other products.
