Benzoic acid is generally often used as a drug or preservative, has the effect of inhibiting the growth of fungi, bacteria and molds, medicinal use is usually applied to the skin to treat ringworm-type skin diseases. It is used in synthetic fibers, resins, paints, rubber, and tobacco industries. Initially benzoic acid is produced by dry distillation or alkaline hydrolysis of benzoin gum, or by hydrolysis of horse urine acid. Industrially benzoic acid is produced by oxidizing toluene with air in the presence of cobalt, manganese and other catalysts; or decarboxylated by hydrolysis of phthalic anhydride. Benzoic acid and its sodium salt can be used as a bacteriostatic agent for latex, toothpaste, jam or other foodstuffs, and as a mordant for dyeing and printing.
